OSHA’s “Fatal Four” Construction Hazards

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration identifies four types of accidents responsible for the majority of construction worker deaths:

Falls

Falls from roofs, scaffolding, ladders, and elevated platforms are the leading cause of construction worker deaths. OSHA requires fall protection for any work at heights of six feet or more, yet fall protection violations are consistently the most-cited OSHA standard.

Struck-By Accidents

Workers struck by falling tools or materials, moving vehicles, or swinging crane loads suffer serious injuries. Proper safety protocols, hard hat requirements, and exclusion zones can prevent many of these accidents.

Electrocution

Contact with overhead power lines, exposed wiring, and defective electrical equipment causes electrocution injuries and deaths on construction sites. Proper lockout/tagout procedures and electrical safety training are essential.

Caught-In/Between

Workers caught in or compressed by equipment, caught between objects, or trapped in collapsing structures face crush injuries, amputations, and death. Trench collapses are particularly deadly and almost always preventable with proper shoring.

Third-Party Liability in Construction Accidents

While workers’ compensation provides limited benefits regardless of fault, construction workers may also have third-party claims against general contractors, subcontractors, property owners, equipment manufacturers, architects and engineers, and safety equipment suppliers. These claims can provide additional compensation for pain and suffering, full lost wages, and other damages not covered by workers’ comp.
